even better than the original…![]()
MADE Products (now called Camera Armor) took an unconsciounably long time to release this version, but at least it was worth waiting for. There are several signficant improvements.
The armor is now made of what appears to be thicker and slightly less-flexible material, very Bat-suity looking. The flash-shoe’s protective “tongue” seems sturdier, and less-likely to be accidentally torn off. But I still wouldn’t go yanking at it.
There’s now a separate silicone “plate” to cover the camera’s bottom. It takes a bit of fumbling to attach, and you have to lift one end to swap the battery, but one of the original design’s weak spots has been strengthened. The plate is too thick for a tripod screw, so a threaded extension is provided.
The bottom edge of the armor no longer overlaps the bottom of the camera. You can attach the optional battery back without having to cut away the edges. (The “plate” and tripod screw extension must be taken off first, of course.)
The buttons to the left of the display are now labelled with white lettering, rather than (the almost-impossible-to-see) “Braille” marks. The letterin’gs paint is thick, so it should give good service, but there’s no way of knowing.
At the moment, only black is available. I’ll know in a few weeks how quickly it gets visibly dirty, and report back. (Dirt is much less visible on the smoke-color armor, but it’s not cutrently offered.)
The new box reads “Impact Protection”, rather than the generic “We shield while you shoot!” on the earlier box. Camera Armor appears to be avoiding any suggestion that its products provide a significant degree of water-proofness. Minor splashes, yes; major soakings, no.
As before, a virtual necessity if you’re photographing away from home or the studio. The slight loss in ease-of-use is more than compensated for by the gain in peace of mind.
FURTHER COMMENTS AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS OF USE
Although this version does pick up dirt, is is nowhere near the dirt magnet the original was. The original quickly turned gray from the dirt; this one has not.
Buyers should understand that MAKE is more concerned with making a sturdy, heavy-duty product than it is in allowing maximum access to every control. The result is that some controls — most notably the Main dial on top — are harder to reach or turn. The tiny multi-controller — which was never easy to use — becomes almost unusable, and the LCD illuminator button and the top-right button on the back of the camera are hard to press. These minor inconveniences have to weighed against the protection gained. For me, Camera Armor is like the American Express card — you “don’t leave home without it”. You can always pull it off if it’s in the way of what you’re doing.
Camera Armor Protective Case for Canon 5D Mark II![]()
This item may have limited use, but is not the final word in protecting your camera. It may provide a little shock protection, but I still wouldn’t drop the camera to test it. The main use would probably be to protect the camera from minor splashes, or maybe a light rain until you can get the camera inside. It does not waterproof the camera, just covers some critical areas, reducing the number of places where water can enter the camera. The armor makes the controls a bit more cumbersome, but that is the trade-off. This is not an item I’d recommend for studio photography where you are in a controlled environment, but it may be of some use for outdoor photography where you could get caught in rain or get splashed. Once again, the armor does not waterproof the camera, but may buy you a little time to get the camera out of the weather.
